DAY 35, 36 & 37 – November 14-16

Thursday, November 14

Today was the beginning of our K’Gari/Fraser Island tour! We met the tour guide at Woolshed Eco Lodge Hostel at 7:00am to begin our day. We headed to the office that the tour is based out of and the people that were 21 or older were able to watch a video and volunteer to drive a veichle. Sadly, Bree was 2 days short of being 21 so neither of us was able to drive one. After everything was organized we drove to the marina to catch a ferry to the island. It was so cool how you can drive the veichles onto a ferry lol!

Ferry

When we arrived on the island we drove through the rainforest for quite a while. It was a bumpy ride but so cool driving through it. It was also very muddy from the rain the night before so that made it extra fun too!

After driving for a while we stopped at a location that had an old school (the second school to be built on the island) as well as some old cabins. The tour guide told us lots of history about the island throughout the walk around this area.

We got back in the veichle and headed to our accommodation. The beach house we stayed at was called “Bringabeeralong”, it was quite nice!

Beach house

After everyone got their stuff organized in the rooms, we had lunch at the beach house and then headed off to cruise on the beach! We could only tour on the beach between a certain time frame as the tide gets too high and the beach disappears, which means we wouldn’t be able to get back. They basically use the beaches as their highways, so cool!

Driving on the beach

As we were driving along the beach we seen our first Dingo!

After cruising along the beach for quite some time, we stopped at a ship that has been left on the island after being used in WW1. The ship is called Maheno. It is falling apart slowly but was cool to see.

After the tour guide told us about the history of the boat we headed to Eli Creek. This was a fresh water creek along the beach that we were able to float along on tubes.

We then headed back to the beach house and on our way back we seen the second most deadliest snake in Australia.

When we got back to the house we had about an hour and a half of free time. Everyone sat around the table, visited and had a drink! We then ate supper.

After supper, we went for a night nature walk and the tour guide told us about the King Toad and that they are taking over the island. They were huge!

After the night walk we headed back to the beach house and had a few drinks with everyone and then headed to bed!

Friday, November 15

Our day started at 6:00am, we had breakfast at the house and then packed everything up to head out for the rest of the day. Our first stop was at a local coffee shop on the island so that everyone could get drinks. We then headed off to one of the lakes on the island called lake Birabeen. We spent about an hour there playing volleyball in the water and then the weather got bad and it started to rain. We headed back to the veichles to try and wait out the rain.

Lake Birabeen

The rain wasn’t going away so we headed up a little ways and tried to go for a little hike but the rain cut that short as well! After that we headed to a place called Central Station for some lunch. This was just a little picnic area. We went for a hike through the rainforest after lunch.

Our next stop was called Lake Mackenzie. This lake was so beautiful, we spent about 2 hours here and we finally got some sun!

We seen a few more dingos roaming along the beaches at Lake Mackenzie and one almost stole a persons bag lol.

Dingo

After lake Mackenzie we headed to a place on the island called Kingfisher which is where we caught the ferry to head back to Hervey Bay!

When we arrived back to Hervey Bay around 6:00pm the tour guide dropped us off at our hostel which is called Woolshed Eco Lodge. We were so exhausted so we had an early night and just hung out at the hostel.

Saturday, November 16

Bree’s birthday!!

We went out to get Açai bowls (Breannas fav) and iced coffees to start out our day.

After that we headed to the grocery store and got a few snacks and stuff for our bus ride. It was another cloudy and humid day. There wasn’t much to check out in Hervey Bay so we decided to head back to the hostel.

We played cards and read our books here for a while until it was time to catch the Grey Hound bus. We caught the bus at 4:30pm and arrived to our next destination Agnes Water/1770 around 8. When we arrived on the bus there was a bunch of people dressed up as banana (the hostel we are staying at is called Cool Bananas, lol) and they loaded our bags and then walked us to our hostel. We checked into our hostel and then went and joined the rest of the travellers in the common area. After that we walked to a place called the Tavern and had a few drinks for Breannas bday!
